Holiday Stress Threatens Work-Life Balance for Many Workers
Monster survey finds most employees feel more stressed and less productive during the holiday season, with many still working even when offices are closed.

The holidays are meant to bring joy and relaxation but for many workers, they bring more stress than cheer. According to new Monster research, over half of workers say their stress levels increase during the holiday season, and many struggle to maintain work-life balance amid mounting pressures at home and on the job.
More Stress, Less Productivity
The November 2024 Monster survey reveals that 53% of workers feel more stressed than usual during the holidays, and 22% say their overall well-being declines this time of year.
That stress takes a toll on performance, too 41% report a decline in productivity, with 31% seeing a slight dip and 10% experiencing a significant drop.
Working Through the Holidays
Even when companies close their doors, many employees never truly log off.
Monster’s findings show:
- 41% of workers still check email daily during holiday breaks
- 23% continue to send work-related emails
- 14% even participate in work calls
Despite these habits, only 19% of workers say they have more remote flexibility during the holidays a sign that expectations for constant connectivity remain high, even during a season meant for rest.
Juggling Work, Family, and Finances
The holidays bring a unique set of stressors that make it harder for employees to balance work and personal life. Workers say they struggle most with:
| 24% | Financial Stress |
| 20% | Time constraints for holiday preparations |
| 19% | Family commitments |
| 17% | Lack of time for self-care |
| 14% | Increased workload |
| 5% | Travel-related stress |
Between gift shopping, social obligations, and year-end work demands, many find themselves stretched thin both emotionally and financially.
Seasonal Side Hustles on the Rise
To ease financial strain, some workers are turning to seasonal jobs for extra income.
34% of respondents say they plan to take a second job this holiday season, often in roles that offer flexible schedules or quick cash flow.
Among those open to extra work, the most popular sectors include:
- 29% – Seasonal retail
- 25% – Customer service / Call center
- 22% – Education / Tutoring
- 20% – Food service / Restaurants / Bartending
- 16% – Event planning / Coordination
These short-term roles provide a financial boost but can also add to the exhaustion many workers already feel this time of year.
Finding Balance Amid Holiday Chaos
Monster’s findings show that holiday stress is more than just a seasonal inconvenience it’s a reflection of how blurred the line between work and personal life has become. Employers can help by encouraging real downtime, respecting boundaries during company breaks, and offering flexibility to help workers manage seasonal responsibilities.
For employees feeling stretched too thin, the holidays might be a good time to reassess priorities or even explore opportunities that better support work-life balance.
