Christos Ballas, M.D., named Carroll Hospital Center January Physician of the Month

Westminster, Md. – (January 8, 2009) — Christos Ballas, M.D., chief of OB/GYN, was recently chosen Carroll Hospital Center’s January Physician of the Month. A physician affiliated with Carroll Hospital Center for 16 years, Dr. Ballas was nominated by a staff member for going above and beyond his normal duties to participate in an operating room fire drill in the hospital’s maternity suite.

“Dr. Ballas constantly exceeds the expectations of staff and patients at the hospital. He is an excellent physician who truly deserves this honor,” Kevin Smothers, M.D., F.A.C.E.P., chief medical officer, senior vice president of medical affairs, said.

Each month, Carroll Hospital Center recognizes the extraordinary patient care achievements of physicians, as well as physician assistants, nurse practitioners and certified nurse anesthetists, with a program called Physician WOW Service Awards. From those who are nominated to receive Physician WOW Service Awards each month, one Physician of the Month is chosen. And, from a year’s worth of Physician of the Month winners, one Physician of the Year is selected.

Community members and hospital associates are encouraged to nominate a medical professional who has demonstrated a special dedication and devotion to patients in a variety of ways. Bill Sears named Carroll Hospital Center January Volunteer of the Month

Westminster, Md. – (January 27, 2009) — Bill Sears was recently selected as Carroll Hospital Center’s January Volunteer of the Month. A volunteer at Carroll Hospital Center for 12 years, Sears was chosen for his commitment and outstanding work at the main information desk.

“Bill is a very dependable and friendly volunteer who diligently performs his responsibilities, welcoming visitors and giving them directions, at the hospital,” Mary Richards, director of volunteer services at Carroll Hospital Center, said.

Each month, Carroll Hospital Center recognizes the extraordinary achievements of its volunteers. They are chosen based on length of service and hours of service or exemplary performance. Community members are encouraged to volunteer their time and skills to assist in Carroll Hospital Center’s important functions. History in the making.

Our first patient stepped through our doors nearly 50 years ago. Some of our first associates are still living in the community, or are part of our Volunteer program. They have fond memories of those first days, but are even more inspired – and even awed – by the changes that have occurred over the past five decades.

Carroll Hospital Center has evolved significantly from a community hospital to become a true medical center – on par with larger urban hospitals. But still, we’re different and – we think – special.

Why? We wouldn’t be here without our community. In fact, our community created us. Nearly 50 years ago, a small group of Carroll County citizens gathered and began fundraising for a hospital. Today, the fruits of their endeavors are beyond what even they expected.

Top-notch programs and services like our Family Birthplace, the new Dixon Outpatient Radiology Center, the Carroll County Cancer Center and The Women’s Place are well beyond what was planned.
