The Sun News

 
Overview
The weekly Myrtle Beach News was founded in 1936. In 1961, the Myrtle Beach Sun (founded in 1950) bought the News and formed The Sun News. The Sun News became a Monday-Saturday paper when it was purchased by The State-Record Company of Columbia in 1973. In 1977, The Sun News added a Sunday paper and began printing seven days a week. Knight Ridder purchased The State-Record Company, including The Sun News, in December 1986.

Major Awards:
  • 2004: The South Carolina Press Association (SCPA) recognized The Sun News with the General Excellence award for the second time in four years; the photography department won Staff of The Year at the South Carolina News Photographers Association’s annual Pictures of The Year contest; the news department garnered 32 SCPA awards, including 16 first-place honors; the marketing and advertising departments took 19 SCPA awards; the marketing department received two gold and one silver ADDYs from the American Advertising Federation.

  • 2000: Society for News Design Award for Excellence, honoree for Neighbors, one of the best redesigned special sections, and named one of the best designed sports sections. Sports Columnist Terry Massey named one of the top 10 sports columnists by the Associated Press. First place in general excellence and 29 other awards from the South Carolina Press Association.

  • 1998: Awarded the Alvah H. Chapman Jr. Award by Knight Ridder in 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998 for top business performance
