In 1862, The Daughters of Charity began St. Agnes Hospital, carrying on their centuries-old mission of service. The first Catholic hospital in Baltimore, St. Agnes was originally created to provide nursing care for the poor. The facility moved to its present location in 1876 and was reorganized as a full-service hospital in 1906.

Today St. Agnes Hospital is a full-service community teaching hospital with residency programs in a number of medical/surgical specialties.

New technology helps diagnose and treat cancer



(Baltimore, MD) – Sometimes, taking care of your health means taking a good look inside. At St. Agnes Hospital, physicians are better equipped with the PET/CT scanner, a new technology that allows them to diagnose and determine the extent of various cancers, damage to cardiac muscle, and neurological disorders, with unprecedented accuracy.



The PET/CT scanner integrates PET and CT technologies into a single device, making it possible to collect both anatomical and biological information during a single examination. The CT, or computed tomography, has long been used to give doctors a very accurate picture of the body’s structures and allow them to locate abnormalities in tissue. PET, or positron emission tomography, measures the body’s metabolism of glucose, a simple sugar used by cells for energy. Fast-growing cancer cells use more glucose than healthy tissue, thereby revealing their size and growth rate on the scan. The CT technology pinpoints the exact location of the tumor, while the PET provides information on the size and growth rate, giving doctors more accurate and detailed information.



“It is an extremely powerful technology that allows us to get the best of both machines,” said Dr. Ethan Spiegler, Director of Nuclear Medicine at St. Agnes Hospital. “The main advantage of PET/CT is the perfect fusion or superimposition of metabolic PET image with an excellent CT image.”



The technology also allows doctors to track the progress of therapy by doing follow-up scans at intervals, to see if cancer is shrinking, growing, spreading, or receding. Because of the more accurate diagnosis, doctors are able to provide better treatment for a variety of diseases, particularly cancer.



“This new technology is changing the way doctors diagnose and care for their patients,” said Dr. Spiegler. “With the information provided by the PET/CT scanner we are able to tailor treatments to the meet patients’ specific needs and treat the cancer more effectively.”




The test is brief and comfortable. Patients fast for several hours, then get an injection of radioactive glucose tracer. The tracer is allowed to circulate through the body for about 45 minutes. Then, the patient undergoes the scan, which can last up to half an hour. A patient benefit of the PET/CT scanner is the open design, which reduces the chances that patients may feel claustrophobic and increase technician access to the patient during the exam.
