WUSA-TV (Washington, DC)
W*USA TV, Gannett Broadcasting’s flagship station in the nation’s capital, has a long and storied history full of groundbreaking firsts and major achievements, all amidst a flurry of ongoing changes in the broadcasting and communications industries over the last 60-plus years.
The station first hit the air on January 16, 1949 and since then has been the first major market station to have a 90-minute newscast, first on the East Coast’s to have a 4pm newscast, and first in DC to broadcast its newscasts in high definition.
Exciting developments and expansions started online first with wusa9.com, and has expanded to other sites like dvmOurtime.com, MomsLikeMe.com, Metromix.com, HighSchoolSports.net and 53 neighborhood websites throughout the DC area.
WUSA is also the home of some original programming. In 2007, WUSA launched “This Week In Defense News”, a half hour weekly show co-produced by Gannett’s Defense News entity. Soon after, other weekly shows like “Platts Energy Week” and “Bio Century This Week” were produced and aired weekly. “The McLaughlin Group”, a longstanding nationally syndicated half-hour weekly public affairs television program, is also produced in the WUSA studios.
WUSA also continues its long and proud history as a dedicated supporter of community events and causes. The station has been in a consistent media partnership for several years running with Susan G. Komen For The Cure, whose annual Race For The Cure remains one of Washington’s biggest events on the National Mall. The station also remains closely tied to the local area chapters of March of Dimes, the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, the American Heart Association and Autism Speaks, as well as the DC-area arm of the USO. WUSA will remain committed to these and other causes in the spirit of important awareness via robust media support and news coverage.
WUSA’s storied past full of broadcasting breakthroughs and industry firsts is one to be very proud of. But WUSA isn’t slowing down any time soon, and the future is sure to be full of more exciting innovations and positive changes for one of the country’s longest-running TV stations.
