Established in 1967 in Carmichael, Mercy San Juan recently celebrated is 40th anniversary of providing quality community healthcare. Always a watchword at Mercy San Juan, collaboration has become even more vital since the opening of our Trauma Center in 1999. Because meeting urgent patient needs rapidly requires smooth cooperation of specialists from multiple disciplines, we've become adept at working productively across departments. Community Outreach

Each year, Mercy serves thousands of families in need of low cost and free healthcare through four clinics in the Sacramento Area. Mercy San Juan will be opening another free clinic in northern Sacramento County in Spring 2007 to serve North Highlands and surrounding community. For fiscal year 2006, the six Sacramento region Mercy Hospitals, have provided over $80 million in community benefits!

Here are a few examples of outreach programs that Mercy San Juan sponsors to benefit the greater community.

Komen Race for a Cure
Spearheaded by 30-year Mercy nurse Linda Ubaldi and by Mercy San Juan surgeon Joelle Jakobsen, MD, more than 1,000 Mercy employees joined the “Mercy Marches for a Cure” team that took part in the May 8, 2006 race to benefit breast cancer research.

Mercy’s team was by far the largest at the event that included 25,000 people from the Greater Sacramento area.

Relay for Life
Relay for Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of our local American Cancer Society.

Mercy Blood Drive
"The staff and employees at Mercy San Juan have consistently demonstrated a commitment to our community and the ever present need for donor blood. With six hospital sponsored blood drives a year, Mercy San Juan employees provided life saving blood and blood products for hundreds of patients within our community. These drives have previously earned Mercy San Juan titles such as "Gift of Hope - Blood drive of the year". Earlier this month (January, 2007), our MSJ Blood Bank achieved a record in number of units processed for one trauma patient. Working closely with BloodSource and other hospital staff, the Lab issued 74 units to a patient over a 6-hour period. It's important to know that through our Medical Center/BloodSource blood drives we can make a positive difference in our own community." -Jon, Director Clinical Laboratory Services

Greater Sacramento Safe Kids Coalition:
Through successful partnerships Safe Kids made significant contributions to our community in the past year. A few highlights include:

* Raising monies to fund local Safe Kids projects focused on Child Passenger Safety, Bicycle, Pedestrian, Drowning Prevention and Poison Prevention.
* Educating parents, caregivers and professionals about safety issues through more than 25 community presentations.
* Advocating for improved legislation to protect children.
* Educating 1,500 parents about the proper installation of car seats, with services in English, Russian, Hmong and Spanish.

"It is important for me to love what I do. I am most excited at work when I get to develop new programs from the ground up. In this position, Mercy has supported and allowed me to be autonomous and bring my own ideas into the development of the program. I’m fascinated by trauma, so the idea of having had the opportunity to develop a program and work in this area was very important to me when we launched trauma services at Mercy San Juan in 1999. I am now assisting in the development of the new neuro- service line and I’m grateful Mercy has provided me with this opportunity. I’ve been here for 29 years, and it is still a tremendous growth experience to be part of saving lives, continually learning and improving quality for our patients.

I’m glad to be part of a team with a great support system at Mercy. People are willing to work together on the things that need to get done at any time, and even across departments. Everyone is important to the whole process. That willingness to help each other - whether or not it’s part of the job - is an important and meaningful part of our work environment.
