Position Summary:

The Governmental Accountant/Auditior performs various functions of a client’s finance department which may include daily accounting and recording of transactions, reconciliation of all types of funds and accounts, budgeting, cash flow analysis, and preparation of financial reports. Other duties may include balancing the budget, external audit preparation, financial reporting and special projects to gain an accurate estimate of anticipated revenues and expenditures. Requires a general understanding of client’s business systems and industry requirements. Also acts as key liaison between the management and the accounting function; navigates communication between client, staff and Firm. Engagement services include:

  • Long Range Planning
  • Cost Containment
  • Financial Reengineering
  • Accounting Outsourcing
  • Facilities Planning/Construction Management

Position Accountabilities:

Responsible for performing the following:

  • Verifies, allocates, and posts details of business transactions to subsidiary accounts in journals or computer files from documents, such as sales slips, invoices, receipts, check stubs, and computer printouts
  • Summarizes details in separate ledgers or computer files and transfers data to general ledger
  • Reconciles and balances accounts
  • May compile reports to show statistics, such as cash receipts and expenditures, accounts payable and receivable, profit and loss, and other items pertinent to operation of business
  • May assist with payroll by calculating employee wages from records or time cards and prepare checks for payment of wages
  • May prepare withholding, Social Security, and other tax reports
  • Applies principles of accounting to compile financial information and prepare financial reports
  • Compiles and analyzes financial information to prepare entries to accounts, such as general ledger accounts, documenting business transactions
  • Analyzes financial information detailing assets, liabilities, and capital, and prepares balance sheet, profit and loss statement, and other reports to summarize current and projected financial position
  • Lead process, prepare or review monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements, including monthly analysis
  • Provide analytical and operational information monthly or as needed to management team to assist with efficient operations; may present to board
  • Review workpaper binder and correctness and adequacy of reserves, accruals and propose needed adjustments
  • Assist with establishing policies for proper revenue and expense recognition
  • Along with others, directs preparation of budgets, reviews budget proposals, and prepares necessary supporting documentation and justification
  • Provides client management with timely reviews of organization's financial status and progress in its various programs and activities
  • Prepares reports which summarize and forecast company business activity and financial position in areas of income, expenses, and earnings based on past, present, and expected operations
  • Audits contracts, orders, and vouchers, and prepares reports to substantiate individual transactions prior to settlement.
  • May establish, modify, document, and coordinate implementation of accounting and accounting control procedures
  • May devise, implement and manipulate manual or computer-based system for general accounting.
  • May review data regarding material assets, net worth, liabilities, surplus, income, and expenditures and analyze petty cash, accounts receivable and payable, negotiable securities, and cancelled checks
  • May compute monthly billings to clients
  • Makes recommendations when appropriate regarding improving operations and financial position of company
  • Coordinate project implementations and ensure client satisfaction
  • Develops ideas to assist clients with operational and control opportunities
  • Works to develop relationships with clients
  • Develop client presentations and participate in selling opportunities

 



Job Requirements


  • A minimum of an Associate's Degree in Accounting, Business Management, Finance, or related field is required

Experience:

  • At least 2+ years’ experience creating and using financial reports in a professional service firm (public accounting), government or school district
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary sitting position for at least 75% of the time.
  • Person in position needs to occasionally move about the inside of the office to access copier machines, file cabinets, etc.
  • Person in position frequently communicates with staff who have inquires. Must be able to exchange information in these situations.
  • Reliable transportation and valid driver’s license are required including a clean driving record; Minimum levels of auto insurance coverage are required
  • Qualified individuals must either reside in Southfield or within Southeast Michigan for this opportunity.

Travel & Hours

  • This is an exempt position that may require some Saturday work hours and overtime during workweek.
  • Qualified individuals must either reside in Southfield or within Southeast Michigan or be willing to relocate to the area for this opportunity.
